Because stronghold is part of warfare terminology, from the standpoint of Ephesians 6: 10-13, we must understand that Satan and his cohorts must have a foothold in order to establish a stronghold in our souls in order to afflict us.
Unforgiveness, bitterness (long held unforgiveness) and resentment gives Satan a foothold in our thought life which empowers him to make further advances into his target’s thought processes and actions. The behavior that typically follows is sinful disobedience of Christ’s instruction and example of forgiveness.
Hanging onto bitterness is self destructive and poisons the soul. It is a violation of love. It is rebellion against Jesus’ instructions to His followers. It inhibits prosperity and or abundance.
Breaking the stronghold of unforgiveness and bitterness is to acknowledge these behaviors as sinful, repent of them and consciously replace these sinful thoughts with the word of God. Unforgiveness and bitterness are spiritual filthiness, so get washed in the water of God’s Word to forgive and stay clean.
